How the pace calculator works

A running pace calculator converts pace in minutes per kilometre to speed in kilometres per hour. With a distance, it also calculates finish time and kilometre splits. On the track, it calculates lap time and the number of laps. Speed in km/h is 3600 divided by seconds per kilometre. A pace of 5:00 min/km is therefore 12.00 km/h, and 10 km at that pace takes 50:00.

01

Pace and speed

Pace is the time one kilometre takes. Convert it to seconds and divide 3600 by that number. 5:30 min/km is 330 seconds, or 10.91 km/h.

02

Distance and splits

Finish time is distance multiplied by pace. 10 km at 5:00 min/km takes 50:00. A negative split starts easier and finishes faster without changing the finish time.

03

Track and lap times

Lap time is pace multiplied by track length divided by 1000. At 5:00 min/km on a 400 m track, each lap takes 2:00, and 3000 metres is 7.5 laps.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions runners ask most often.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is measured in minutes per kilometre and tells you how long one kilometre takes. Speed is measured in kilometres per hour. 6:00 min/km is 10.00 km/h, while 4:00 min/km is 15.00 km/h.

How do I convert min/km to km/h?

Convert the pace to seconds and divide 3600 by that number. 5:30 min/km is 330 seconds. 3600 / 330 = 10.91 km/h.

What is a negative split?

A negative split means the second half is faster than the first. The calculator keeps the finish time fixed, but makes the start easier and the finish faster.

Which track length should I use?

An outdoor running track is 400 metres. Indoor tracks are often 200 metres. The indoor track at Bislett is 546.5 metres.

Is this the same calculator as in the app?

Yes. Pace, distance and track use the same formulas as the pace calculator in PacePilot.
